Gustavo Pupo-Mayo and Ambassador Valdés
July 7th, 2022: TAP co-sponsored a dinner for Chilean Ambassador to the U.S. Juan Gabriel Valdés. The event in Washington D.C. largely focused on discussion regarding the country’s newly-proposed Constitution. The final draft was submitted on July 4th and Chileans will have the opportunity to approve or reject it in a special referendum on September 4th.
During a wave of protests in 2021, Chileans demanded the country’s deep inequality be addressed at the Constitutional level. This effort led to the creation of the Constitutional Assembly that ultimately published the draft in question. The Ambassador emphasized President Gabriel Boric’s goal to respond to calls for reform raised by Chilean citizens while also protecting foreign investment.
